- Establishment of Opium Infrastructure: The French built “La Manufacture d’Opium” (the refinery) in 1881, whose remnants and logo can still be seen today. Sales were managed by “La Régie de l’Opium” through approved distributors selling in stamped boxes with government-set prices.
- Significant Revenue Source: Opium revenue became a major part of the colonial budget, reaching up to 37% in 1914. The opium was mostly imported from India, with minimal local production. While restrictions on new opium dens began in 1907, production continued until 1954.
